And those are the organic vegetables that go into organic pet food. The meats are often trim pieces, not the whole muscle meat, because you can't afford it. I know, because probably one of the largest organic suppliers in the country came to us at a trade show and said, "You should put our brand of organic meat in your dog food because we have this other company doing it, and we're trying to expand into the market." I said, "Well, tell me what a whole pound of muscle meat would cost me. He said, "You couldn't afford to use whole muscle meat; we sell the trim pieces. |

I wanted to make the hemp more accessible to people, and they are more accessible at a lower price point; therefore, they're not organic. But the chocolate raspberry bar has organic chocolate, because normal chocolate contains lecithin, which is from soy. Soy is generally GMO, right? I want to avoid that, so I buy the organic chocolate for those, even though it's a non-organic blend, to ensure that there is no genetically modified lecithin used in my bar. So that's one principle. There are also no hydrogenated or trans fats and no refined sugar. |

IFOAM is The International Federation of organic Agricultural Movements. It is a third party agreement between the USDA and BioGrow New Zealand.
Mike: Does IFOAM review the documentation or the product?
IFOAM rep: IFOAM basically gives the approval to BioGrow to go out and give the accreditation as an IFOAM-accredited certifier.
Heine: It's similar to how Quality Assurance is a certifier for the USDA; it's the same situation. IFOAM checks out their qualifications and then hires them as their agents. |

Yes! organic fruits have much higher concentrations of phytonutrients (natural plant medicines), vitamins and minerals. organic farming is also better for the environment. But even non-organic superfruits are very good for your health, and in my opinion, the health benefits of the natural fruit juices far outweighs the cancer risk of pesticide residues.
#4: Why do you call apple juice and grape juice "junk juices?"
Many superfruit juice products that claim "pomegranate" or "blueberry" on the front label are actually made mostly with cheaper juices such as grape and apple. |

I'd take non-organic produce over packaged foods any day of the week, if I didn't have the funds or the choice of organic foods. Now, of course, I support organic foods very strongly. That's your best choice. But if you're on a tight budget and you need to make a choice, go with the non-organic fruits and vegetables.
Ben: Even if it were true that the healthy foods were more expensive, the amount that you save avoiding the medical bills that come from eating on the diseased side of the pyramid more than makes up for it.
Mike: When people consume unhealthy foods, there is a hidden cost. |

First, do you agree that there is some degree of success in the fact that consumer demand for organic products is now so strong? Is that not a success by itself?
Ronnie: It is a tremendous success. It is attributed to the fact that a lot of us spent the last 30 years building up an alternative food and farming system in the United States. This alternative system has proved to be much better than industrial agriculture, and so now the latest polls show 75 percent of Americans say they are shopping for healthier food. |

If you stop eating the foods that are heavily advertised and ignore the advice of nutritionists, dietitians and doctors who are still pushing old-school nutrition, and instead start eating natural and organic foods, healthy oils and plant-based fats, while avoiding toxic ingredients – including red meat, dairy products and excitotoxins – then you, too, can create healthy blood chemistry that you can verify with simple laboratory analysis. It's very straightforward. |

It needs to go organic in a way that sets a precedent for other industries. This is the precedent we need to set in this industry, but generally, you watch what happens at Body Shop or any of the progressive businesses that sell out, and they just lose social mission. That's what we care about. We're kind of a nonprofit. We don't need to go out and hassle people to give us money. We sell a really cool product; it's part of our mission.
Mike: It's a fantastic sustainable business model for social change. |

It was done through the German certification agency that we used to certify our quinoa as organic. Hans Gotts introduced me to Erpe. He knew of them and what they were doing. I expressed to him my concern. I had tried two other possible sources; the problem being there was no way to set up measurements of whether the money was flowing to the farmer. It helps to be in the Peace Corps in a country for three years. You can judge the culture quickly. So, this was the third attempt, and it worked out fine. |

There's no way that belongs in a natural product, let alone an organic product.
Mike: So you should watch out for any chemical word that ends with "eth." Some companies like to list some ingredients and say they are from corn or something.
Bronner: Yes, and sometimes they're right. I mean there are better or worse surfactants. Some do come from corn sugar and coconut fatty acids, but these marketing editors don't know what's what; they don't care. They'll say it's all from corn, you know?
Mike: So to switch gears, Dr. Bonner's Soap Company has remained in the family. |

Traditionally organic has always meant that you raise crops without chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and that you raise animals without drugging them up with hormones or antibiotics. You cannot take sewage sludge and put it on farmlands. You cannot feed animals things like blood, slaughterhouse waste, manure and municipal garbage, and you cannot use untested and hazardous technologies like genetic engineering or fruit irradiation. |

We've just recently been given JAS, which is the Japan organic Certification symbol. We've become certified there. Our next spurt will be the Pacific Rim, specifically Japan. So, we've kind of grown in a step function, and then we jumped up when the west coast manufacturers entered into it. Then we jumped again when Great Britain entered into it. And we're going to jump again when Japan and the Pacific Rim enters.
I see an increased awareness because people are more interested in whole grains now. |
| The saponin is not recoverable, but it is a type of organic fertilizer. It also serves that function, so on the experimental farm near our post-harvest facility in Ecuador, it's used as a spray fertilizer on other crops as well as quinoa.
Mike: Interesting. So, your quinoa is coming from Ecuador and, did you say Bolivia as well?
Leventry: No, just Ecuador. The major suppliers from South America are Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. Bolivia is the largest, and Ecuador is probably the second-largest, followed by Peru. |

We, right now in the United States, have an excess of milk being produced by family-scale dairy farmers who are not yet organic. It would be very simple to help those who want to make the transition do so if we were to force the government to give us a fair share of our subsidies to help these farmers do that.
Mike: Now, you mentioned that pasture-fed cows are healthier cows. This gets back to something you mentioned earlier that needs to be emphasized, because most people simply do not believe this is happening. Conventional cows, in fact, are being fed chicken litter and other animals. |

You can use organic soils that have microorganisms in them, so that they're living in balance with the natural ecosystem. You can create positive energy by having the foods harvested by people who are happy to be doing this work, who are not slave workers and who are making a fair wage, either by farming or wild harvesting these foods. This is how you create healthy foods, and when you purchase something at the grocery store, the closer you can get to that vibration of happiness, the healthier the energetic effect is going to be on your body. |

Lest you think this is an anomaly or the sole epicenter for the health food crowd, about a mile away is Clark's Nutrition Center, another supermarket-sized outlet for organic foods and supplements. One entire wall at Clark's is devoted to gluten-free nourishment. Another aisle contains huge, 50-pound bags of organic carrots, and coffee-table-sized flats of organic wheatgrass that could be mistaken for miniature lawn plots. |

And then some time last year, since I last saw you, we brought out our maca bars with 2,000 milligrams of raw certified organic maca per bar. I'm going to give these to you and you're going to love them. |
